You may have some questions we would like to try and answer:
Q: What should I wear?
A: Dress as you normally would to be casual and comfortable. We at the DeGraff Baptist Church wear shirts & ties to T-shirts and jeans and anything in between.
Q: Where can I park?
A: Parking is provided across from the front doors of the church and also behind the church.
Q: What door should I use to enter?
A: The front doors are open for the entire duration of the service. The rear and side doors are locked 5 minutes after the service begins for safety precautions.
Q: Who can answer questions I may have when I arrive?
A: One of the greeters at either door can answer your questions or direct you to someone who can.
Q: Will someone help my children to Sunday School class?
A: Our Sunday school teachers will cordially invite your children to attend Sunday school and escort you them to the appropriate class if they are comfortable to attend.
Q: Are children welcome in the worship service?
A: All children are welcome in our worship services. We believe children learn how to worship by experiencing worship and seeing it modeled by their parents and others around them. If you need a quiet place to attend to your child, we have a waiting area with restrooms, changing table, seating and a speaker so can listen to the service.
Q: What type of service do you have and how long does it last?
A: Our services are largely traditional and last 60 to 70 minutes in duration. Sunday school class lasts from 30 to 45 minutes.
Q: What is expositional preaching and how is it different from topical preaching?
Topical preaching begins with a topic picked by the speaker. Something he wants to address, or teach.
He has an idea or thought and then finds scripture or biblical material to fit the topic. Topical preaching is driven by the preacher’s agenda…. what he wants to talk about. The danger in this kind of preaching is our agenda can lead to twisting scripture, using it out of context, riding hobby horse issues, and never understanding the book the verse is taken from or the reason the author was writing the book.
Expositional preaching begins with the Bible. The speaker does not decide what to preach and then look for scripture to match it. Instead he looks at the scripture and allows the scripture to determine what he will preach. His goal is to preach/teach so the scripture speaks. Most expositors will preach through books of the Bible and attempt to be true to the context; historically, culturally and to the language which it was written.
